Rockdale County named for Rockdale Baptist Church? Not True
It has been considered a matter of pride among some members that the county was actually named after our church! In fact, the book - AHistory of Rockdale County, copywrite 1978, page 15, seems to support this idea. However, after researching the matter further, there are multiple newspaper articles, all prior to the founding of Rockdale Baptist Church in 1847, that seems to contradict this common belief. In 1829, an article in the Savannah Republican newspaper indicated that a new Post Office department had been established called Rockdale in Newton County. And in 1830, an article in the Federal Union newspaper (Milledgeville), there are references to the Rock Dale district in Newton County. Finally, it appears in The Heritage of Rockdale County, GA copywrite 1998, page 6, that states - "The name Rockdale was in use long before Rockdale officially became a county."
